a few new things

These blue plates, which we picked up this weekend in the camping section of the store.

I grew up with everything blue enamel.  We had pots, pans, teapots, plates, bowls, cooking utensils, serving bowls, and even tiny dishware for the kids.  Dollhouse enamelware, too.

I remember buying a blue frying pan for my mother’s birthday and hiding it under my bed.  Which she found, when it was time to clean my room.  (Remember, Mama?  Ah, the guilt, I know.)  That bed hid quite a mess under it.  All of which had a reason for being there, of course.

I bought red camping dishes a couple of years ago.  With only four settings, though, we sometimes turn up one short, not to mention when we have company (every year or two).  The blue makes a nice contrast, and we can mix and match them.

I love using camping dishes for everyday, in the same way some people like using fine china every day.  It just makes you feel special.  Like you’re camping, but in a cozy setting.

Oh, and there’s one more new thing in the kitchen…

This.  I found it in the laundry room, covered with David’s shirt.  It’s quite lovely, one of those sweet presents he gives every once in a while for no reason at all.  I whipped up some cream for this–

in less than half the time my tiny hand-held one takes.  I can see I’ll have to give her a name, as she already holds a prominent place on the kitchen counter (right next to the jars of brewing kombucha…oooh, special.)

The days have warmed up a little here, and the snow is gone, for now.  Our school days have relaxed into an easy routine, we’ve dropped the time schedules and a few books, leaving a daily core (reading, geography, Bible, time telling, and a comprehensive workbook for fun).  The rest she picks through and does as she feels.

Besides the core subjects, most days have been spent drawing, cutting, and working with fabric.  And crawling around on all fours making dinosaur sounds.  It’s educational, I tell you.  In fact, we all get educated–about predators and herbivores, prehistoric reptiles and mammals, land and sea dwellers.  Cash just gets scared.

This weekend we’re doing something special, going on a little tiny trip and spending a couple of nights in a hotel.  It’s our first family trip in quite a while, since Caleb missed the New York trip.  The kids still aren’t quite sure where we’re going, which elevates the excitement even more.
