little turkeys for the table
We’ve received our book in the mail, and we love it. “Wooden spool birds” was our very first project.
There’s nothing quite like getting a free book in the mail…somehow it makes doing the projects even more exciting! We hopped in the car and took a trip to JoAnn Fabrics (along with an armload of coupons) to pick up feathers and pipe cleaners. I finished up 3 spools of thread by running the last bits onto bobbins, and we got started on the birds–er, turkeys, in our case.
We twisted a pipe cleaner around a thread spool and formed the ends into feet. Using construction paper, I drew the front/neck/head of the bird and glued it to one end of the spool. We glued a little feather to the head and 3 larger “tail feathers” to the other end of the spool. It took a few minutes to figure out how to bend the feet just right to make it stand, but otherwise this is a super simple project.
It’s also a super satisfying one for the small folk.
With Thanksgiving over and the leftovers long gone, there’s nothing like putting a little turkey pizzaz on the table!
