birthday hats (and skirts)

My sister’s baby, Madeline, is turning one year old!  To celebrate, I stitched up a couple of reversible summer hats.

The pattern is the Oliver + S Bucket Hat.  Have I mentioned how much I love Oliver + S?

I made the Small, which fits 12-24 months.  The pattern sizes range from 6 months to 8 years.  (Hmm. I might just have to make one for Zia’s birthday, too).

Because they are reversible and you can turn the brim up or down, each hat flaunts a few different looks.

With the right fabric, they would be great for boys, too.

The pattern instructions suggest using 1/3 yard for the outside and 1/3 yard for the lining.  I just used a fat quarter for each.  (It would take more fabric for the larger sizes, though.)

Speaking of fat quarters, I also made up a couple of fat quarter skirts to match.  I bought a couple of bundles of coordinating fat quarters and picked out my favorites for the hats and skirts.

I love this fabric.  This skirt is trimmed with the ribbon the bundles were tied with.

The whole project was lots of fun…and just so easy-peasy-Japanese-y. 🙂

Happy Birthday, Madeline!  Have fun with your new fat quarter wardrobe!
