thirteen
Caleb turned 13 today. Zia and I spent the day wrapping a few presents, setting up a treasure hunt, decorating the house, running to town for last-minute ingredients, making lasagna, baking cupcakes, and cooking soft candy caramel for the icing.
I can promise I will never, ever attempt this Southern Caramel Cake recipe again. Ever. I worked on it for 3+ hours and came as close to losing my cool with a batch of cupcakes as I ever have. I managed to salvage exactly thirteen out of the twenty-four I started with. They turned out highly imperfect, but I didn’t hear any complaints from the eaters.
Zia and I had a lot of fun setting up this treasure hunt that we found on Jillee’s site. Now Zia wants one for her birthday, too. We hid notes everywhere from the freezer to the bathtub to the belly cast to the giant corn plant.
There were a few brainy Caleb-type presents at the end of the hunt. One was a tiny salt-powered robot (to build) that is really quite funny speeding along on the floor. Cash is fascinated by it.
It’s hard to believe that little guy who was only three when I met him is now thirteen. I can’t imagine our family without him, and we’re so glad he is here with us–turning into a teenager.
Happy birthday, Caleb!
