Crystal’s zebra

My friend Crystal loves zebras. This summer she went to Africa on a missions trip, and although I know she really went to give of herself and help people in need, I can’t help but wonder if secretly she hoped to capture a zebra and bring it home. I know those trans-atlantic planes are big, but how she figured she would sneak it on the plane and not have anyone see it or SMELL it, is beyond me. I’ll have to ask her about that. Just the same, when she came home zebra-less, I felt it was only fitting that  I make her a zebra. Besides, it happened to be her birthday right after the trip. So here’s the zebra. He’s just a little guy, scarcely more than an inch long, made of clay, baked, and painted to look just like his wild relatives. A shiny coat of shellac gives him a nice polished look.

I presented him to Crystal in his own little birthday box, a star-shaped one that I hand-painted to match his spunky stripey splendor.

Crystal was delighted, and I’m sure he fits in her room better than the real thing.

And finally, my plug: miniature sculpture is a specialty of mine, so if you want a little ANYTHING, drop me a line, and you can have a zebra (or elephant or giraffe or golfer or motorcycle or cheesecake or whatever else you can dream up) of your very own. It doesn’t even have to be your birthday.
