breakfast superfood #4
Breaking breakfast news flash. There is a fourth superfood flying around the kitchen!
I’ve had my rip-roaring chia/hemp/cacao-powered breakfast pudding for the 3rd day in a row. Still awesome, but the last two days were not as energizing as the first…I guess because I had single servings instead of double, like the first day. One awesome addition I made was to sprinkle unsweetened (they are still very sweet!) carob chips into the pudding…AWESOMELY YUMMY! I never thought carob was especially nutritious, but I was reading about it and found it is really good for respiratory and digestive health, as well as having several other benefits. Here’s a list of a few of carob’s boons that I snagged from Oh She Glows (thanks, Angela!)
- Improves digestion.
- Lowers cholesterol level in the blood. Carob seeds don’t have a cholesterol agent.
- It acts as an antioxidant.
- It can be used to treat diarrhea in children and adults.
- It contains an active substance that is effective against asthma. Carob is also used for asthma problems caused by allergies.
- It doesn’t contain caffeine. It works nicely for patients that have high blood pressure.
- It can help to prevent lung cancer, if used regularly.
- It contains vitamin E and is used for the treatment of cough, flu, anemia and osteoclasis.
- Carob tannins have Gallic acid. Gallic acid is analgesic, anti allergic and antibacterial. It is also antioxidant, antiviral and antiseptic.
- It is used for the treatment of polio in children, as the Gallic acid in carob tannins helps to prevent polio.
- It is rich in phosphorus and calcium. For this reason, it is used in the fight against osteoporosis.
So, I confess: I am now a carob junkie, along with inhaling hemp, chia, and cacao. Well, now I have names for my next 4 children. (Or at least, Chia is a go…I dig the Mia, Zia, Chia thing!)
