geocaching expedition #1
We went geocaching for the first time today!
In case you haven’t heard of it, geocaching is like going on a treasure hunt. The geocache is a container filled with odds and ends which you find either with a GPS device or by following a map. Once you find the cache, you open it, see what’s inside, sign and date the log, and replace the cache where you found it.
I checked the national geocache registry to find a cache hidden near us. Lo and behold, there was one at our local park! It had been hidden in 2006, and the last time someone found it was yesterday.
So off we set on our hunt…
We checked the landmarks on the geocache map and started looking.
There it is–in plain sight, but camouflaged.
Zia pulled it out.
Yay!
Even Cash felt our victory, though he was probably bewildered by us adding the prefix “geo” to his name so many times.
It was a beat-up canister covered with camo duct tape.
There was an odd assortment of things inside: a green tea drink packet, a receipt, a hair clip, 2 marbles, a crumpled business card.
We signed the log.
The rules are that if you take something, you need to replace it with something of equal or greater value.Ā Zia took a marble and put in a pink seal eraser, then put it back where we found it.
See it?
Here we are–the successful hunters with our trophy.Ā More hunts to come–I think we’ve caught the geocaching bug!
I have wanted to do this as a hobby with the grandbabies! Fun fun.
Definitely fun. Thanks for your comment, Nana Kerri!
Geocaching is very fun! A friendly word of caution: there is another, very similar hobby called “letterboxing”, and letterboxes are often mistaken for geocaches. If you find a hidden container with a logbook and a rubber stamp in it, and the word “letterbox” somewhere on the book or box, then please don’t take the stamp : )
My husband and I have been letterboxing for years, and we love it! Geocaching is what all our friends do, though, so I completely understand the awesome draw ; ) Have fun treasure hunting!
Actually, I have heard of letterboxing but didn’t know what it was! Funny how you find out about all these “underground” activities that have been going on unnoticed by the general public. š
