plant cell cake
Caleb had an assignment for science class to make a 3-D model of a cell. He chose a plant cell, and we all thought a cake would be an interesting (and yummy) rendition.
We found a recipe for a dense yellow cake and a basic vanilla frosting. We cut a third off the finished 9″x13″ cake and set it on top to make a cutaway square.
He ended up making three batches of frosting and coloring them a few different shades to show the different parts of the cell. The peppermint makes up the nucleolus, and the brown frosting around it is the nucleus. Skittles became chloroplast, and so on.
He labeled each part and typed up a page of definitions and an explanation of how proteins are made. He did an awesome job on the whole project, blew his teacher away, and got 120 out of 125 points. Best of all, of course, he gets to eat a whole cake at school with his friends.
Zia was a little disappointed it would be devoured without her, but we sliced off a little bit of plain cake for her and Caleb gave her more than her share of frosting-covered spoons, bowls, and beaters. Big brothers are good like that.
he’s a lucky boy to have a stepmom like you. (stepmom? is that what you guys call your role?)
Yes, that’s what he calls me. It seems stepmothers are supposed to be terribly mean and wicked, so there is a bit of confusion when small friends come to visit. They leave with a whole new understanding of stepmother-hood. 🙂
How cool! I have had the “step monster” and the cool stepmother. I call her my Smom because I really don’t think of her as a stepmom but rather my other mother…even though I was an adult when she entered my life.
Well, I would definitely rather be Smom than Step Monster! Glad you had a sweet “step” to counteract the nasty one. 🙂
