Poco Mountain Girl

Zia decided to paint some balloons the other day. I don’t know how she got the idea–she has never drawn anything representational before, not even a smiley face. Before I knew it, she was producing balloons left and right.

Then came the second surprise of the day: she colored them in. Always before, she very happily colored everywhere except inside the lines. Of course, me being a self-respecting artist, I would never box her in to something as silly as coloring inside the lines.

So as you can imagine, it blew me completely away to see her effortlessly and naturally coloring her balloons inside the lines. I suppose she just never had a reason to do that before–until she decided to make some nice, rounded balloons.

I should have known her.

She didn’t walk until she was 17 months old, and that was because she wanted to push a tiny shopping cart around. Suddenly, she could walk like a pro–and she wasn’t leaning on that shopping cart, either. She was high-stepping like a little lady on a mission to shop, lifting that cart, flinging it left and right, shoving it in every direction.

I guess that’s just the way she is, walking, painting balloons, or whatever.
