Here is my latest cord burning box.  Just to clarify things, I don’t normally paint naked bodies or show them on my blog, but I finally decided to put this up.  It’s art, after all.  🙂

The woman who ordered this for her baby’s birth asked for a pregnant woman with a labyrinth on her belly.  My first try produced a beautiful woman with lovely golden intestines on her belly, lol.  (Thanks to David for pointing that out.)  I squared the design up a little and it worked better.  The belly designs are a modification of the Chartres Cathedral labyrinth, which I think is such a pretty, feminine design.

I decided on the Native American “Man in the Maze” design for the end of the box.  It represents the journey through life, but I turned it over to use as a representation of birth.

If I could do it over, I would so fill in those holes.  My midwife for Cash provides me with the boxes, and I usually just paint them as they are.  Most of my designs are more concealing, I think, or for some reason the holes never bothered me. These do, but live and learn.

The last box I painted was the Sun Face box.  The midwife who ordered it sent this email after she received it:

I love it!!! The box was beyond any expectations I may have had. The artwork is amazing and I can’t wait to take it to the next birth. The picture of the bowl I sent was the container I had been using for cord burning but at the last birth my apprentice dropped it, this one came at just the right moment. When I opened the box it took my breath away I am so pleased…Thank you for gifting my new babies with ceremony art and beauty.

Artist’s doubts and fears quelled, hehee.

The recipient of this box also loved it, which I was glad to hear.  She didn’t even mention the holes. 🙂

    Hi Mom,
Yup, she’s back, and rarin’ to go! I’ve got a new project in the works, too. Glad this “winter of the soul” wasn’t as long as Colorado winters, lol.

I think Study Man will do fine on his test. He’s a sharp one.

Glad you like the holes. 🙂
